Galle Day Tour

Galle Fort is one of the best-preserved examples of a European-built fortified city in South Asia, its ramparts enclosing a UNESCO-listed grid of Dutch colonial townhouses, boutique shops, cafes and a still-functioning lighthouse. A day tour along the south coast pairs the fort's history with a stop to see Sri Lanka's iconic stilt fishermen along the way.

The coast road from Colombo or the southern beach towns to Galle is scenic in its own right, running alongside the Indian Ocean for much of the way. SL Taxi drivers can build in photo stops and time the visit for the golden light of late afternoon along the ramparts.

   Galle Lighthouse

   Visit Sri Lanka's oldest lighthouse, still in operation at the fort's southeastern tip.

   Stilt fishermen stop

   Break the journey near Koggala or Ahangama to photograph the traditional stilt fishermen perched over the shallows.
