SnorkellingSnorkelling in Sri Lanka doesn't require a boat or a certification — several of the best reefs sit just metres from the beach in calm, shallow water. Hikkaduwa's protected coral sanctuary and Polhena's reef in Matara are both walk-in spots, while Pigeon Island near Trincomalee is a short boat ride from shore but offers some of the clearest water and healthiest coral on the island.
Because good snorkelling depends on calm, clear water, timing and coast make a real difference. SL Taxi can advise on which coast is in season and get you there for the best morning visibility, before afternoon winds stir up the water.
