Turtle HatcherySri Lanka's south-west coast is nesting ground for five of the world's seven sea turtle species, and a string of hatcheries around Kosgoda, Bentota and Induruwa work to protect eggs from predators and poaching before releasing hatchlings back into the ocean. Rekawa Beach, further south, is one of the most important nesting sites in Asia and runs guarded night viewings during nesting season.
These sites are easy half-day additions to a south coast itinerary, and evening or night visits (for nesting or release viewings) are especially rewarding. SL Taxi can arrange the timing around low-light hours when hatcheries are most active.
